This half-day workshop, co-sponsored by the MCDM, will focus on the opportunities opening up to freelancers (with a focus on international freelancing), the specific dangers and risks that unaffiliated reporters endure in this new climate of international reporting and the unique ethical complications and challenges of international reporting (especially when on your own).

The workshop will be led by Common Language Project journalists Sarah Stuteville, Alex Stonehill, and Jessica Partnow, in addition to the Seattle Times Assistant Managing Editor Jim Simon, MCDM Director Hanson Hosein,  and Seattle based international radio freelancer Jake Warga, who is currently preparing for a solo embed tour of Iraq in December.

David Domke: Healthcare in the Media Revolution

Watch the video >>

Tuesday, October 13, 2009, 7:30 – 8:30pm Downstairs at Town Hall; enter on Seneca Street.

It wasn’t so long ago that staying informed meant subscribing to your hometown newspaper and watching one of three broadcast networks. Today, the business models of “the news” are under siege, and with them the role and popular understanding of journalism itself: in its place, niche-marketed cable shows, and an amateur and professional “news-gathering” apparatus of blogs, news portals, and social networking. A media revolution is being waged all around us—how are we doing? As where and how we get our news changes, can we still interpret in the same way? And what are the consequences for our democracy? A new series, co-produced with the University of Washington’s Department of Communication and called The Revolution is Here: How Digital Media and Awakened Citizens Are Changing the World, will explore the ways we are empowered and diminished in the new media environment. Each program in the four part series will zero in on a different “top story”; the series kicks off with Professor (and Department Chair) David Domke’s analysis of the ways public engagement around and news coverage of the healthcare debate inflect, and even supplant, public understanding.

Advance tickets are $5 at www.brownpapertickets.com or 800/838-3006, or at the door beginning at 6:30 pm. Town Hall members receive priority seating.

Smartly Leveraging Social Media for your Business: Practical Tips, Tweets & Tactics

The MCDM is a proud event partner for the upcoming WTIA Technology in Focus Series Event - Smartly Leveraging Social Media for Your Business: Practical Tips, Tweets & Tactics.

Herban Feast | Sodo Park

6/24/2009 | 5:00pm to 8:00pm

Companies that have social media strategies are finding them to be a valuable tool for driving customer engagement and building brand loyalty; one that translates into real revenue and increased customer satisfaction.  Companies that don’t are finding out the hard way that their customers are using services like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and FriendFeed to share their experiences – both good and bad — with specific brands.

At a minimum, companies need to be aware of what’s being said about them in the millions of online conversations that take place every day.  Ideally, they should learn how to be an active participant in them.  This panel will provide a practical overview of how companies can put social media to work for them.

  • Which social networks and social media platforms are appropriate for corporate participation?
  • What are some key lessons learned from companies that have taken the plunge in social media?
  • How do companies measure the impact and ROI of their social media efforts?
  • How can my company get started?

 Meet the Experts

  • Chris Pirillo, Founder, Lockergnome (Moderator)
  • Louise Rasho, Senior Manager - Marketing Communications, Microsoft Office Live
  • Navin Mithel, Managing Director of e-Commerce and CRM, Alaska Airlines
  • Blake Cahill, Senior Vice President Marketing, Visible Technologies
  • Brian Goffman, CEO & Co-founder, Optify

Three years after Hurricane Katrina’s onslaught, New Orleans is at a tipping point. Parts of the city still look like a war zone, the recovery further slowed by a bad economy and high energy prices.

Some neighborhoods remain half-populated, former residents scared away by a lack of essential services – particularly retail. As “The Shock Doctrine” author Naomi Klein told us, “New Orleans is still being destroyed.”

However, even as chain retailers are reluctant to return to the city in the aftermath of the storm, independent Mom & Pop stores immediately stepped into breach. “Independent America: Rising from Ruins” is the inspirational story of the small businesses that have risked everything to resurrect their neighborhoods.

From the city’s top chef (and former marine) who manned a soup kitchen, to the hardware store owner who kept looters at bay to provide vital supplies, this documentary shows how neighborhood Mom & Pops are crucial to community vitality – especially during times of disaster.

Learn from The Digital President on Jan. 15

Facebook. Twitter. Mybarackobama.com. Text messaging. The President-elect used all of these digital tools to devastating effect in the 2008 election. How did he do it? What strategic lessons can we learn from Barack Obama’s high-tech campaign? How might he deploy this online army of millions to govern? And does President Obama’s historic rise to the White House also propel social networking into the mainstream?

The answers to these important questions have a profound impact on the very near future of our democracy, as well as how we organize, communicate, and even do business in the digital age.  Obama’s campaign manager, David Plouffe, describes it as a convergence between movement politics and business strategy.  On the eve of the inauguration, join us for a dynamic, engaging UW Insight conversation that seeks to put this digital revolution in perspective.

The Event:
Thursday January 15, 2009
Johnson 102, UW Campus,
6:30pm reception (refreshments served).
Program starts at 7:00 p.m., with Q&A throughout.

"Media in Crisis: The Journalist as Entrepreneur"

Common Language Project logoThe Common Language Project (www.clpmag.org) will be the focus of a free, MCDM-sponsored workshop, "Media in Crisis: The Journalist as Entrepreneur" to be held on Friday, Nov. 14 at 4:30 p.m. in Communications 120. Open to all students, faculty and the general public. Assignment editors from local media will participate as well (KUOW, Seattle Times) to discuss realistic freelance expectations and the latest opportunities.

Three 20-something Seattle-ites have decided to skip the coffee-fetching internship positions and go straight into the journalism profession: by raising funds to report on under-covered stories around the world. They present an exciting new business model to future journalists and storytellers. How do they get paid? What are the copyright issues? How do they persuade established news organizations to acquire their content? How do they manage logistics on the ground in far-flung places? What are the best tools for this kind of work? How do you report for print, radio, and online all at the same time?

The CLP will also be available to attend at least two journalism classes the following week in order to interact directly with students who may want to follow up on this new approach to journalism.

"Leveraging Social Media"
A free roundtable discussion about organizing, protesting, or just selling stuff

Tuesday, October 7
6:30 - 8:00 P.M.
Communications 120 (discussion) | Communications 126 (reception)

Speaker iconWatch the video

How did 4 million people organize themselves to protest against FARC in Colombia? How did a presidential campaign raise $6.2 million in one day?

How did 40,000 people come together for a nationwide cleanup day in Estonia?

Through the use of social media and collaborative tools.

These online tools are changing the way people communicate and work together. How can organizers, entrepreneurs, activists, and do-gooders leverage the social web to aid their efforts?

Local social media experts Joey Mornin and Brett Horvath (Pickens Plan, Facebook online voter registration application) and faculty from the University of Washington will offer insight into the changing online landscape, and provide case studies of how activists and entrepreneurs have successfully leveraged social media. The seminar will be a collective brainstorming session to share ideas, tell stories, and think about how to get your message out into the digital age.

Complimentary refreshments will be provided.

RSVP via https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/44880 (gives us a sense of our numbers, so please do register).

A great networking opportunity for all!
